Borderline Personality Disorder

What is Borderline Personality Disorder?

About BPD

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), also known as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD), is a mental health disorder characterized by a pattern of varying moods, self-image, and behavior. These symptoms often result in impulsive actions and problems in relationships with other people. A person with BPD might experience intense episodes of anger, depression, and anxiety that may last from a few hours to days.

BPD is like the emotional version of being a burn victim. Everything hurts more than it seems to for everyone else, and any 'thick skin' you're supposed to have just isn't there.

Experiences of BPD

People with BPD can have a wide range of experiences, but common ones include:

Intense emotions that fluctuate frequently and rapidly

Fear of abandonment and efforts to avoid it

Unclear or unstable self-image

Impulsive, self-destructive behaviors

Self-harm or suicidal behavior

Feelings of emptiness

Intense, inappropriate anger

Paranoia or dissociation triggered by stress

The causes of BPD are not fully understood, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic, biological, and environmental factors including:

A family history of BPD or other personality disorders

Structural and functional changes in the brain that influence impulse control and emotional regulation

Traumatic life events, such as abuse, abandonment, or adversity during childhood

Misdiagnosis can occur with BPD, as its symptoms overlap with those of other mental health disorders. It is not uncommon for individuals to be diagnosed with mood disorders, such as depression or bipolar disorder, before receiving a BPD diagnosis

Treatment and Support

Effective treatments for BPD include:

Psychotherapy, such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which can help individuals learn skills to manage their emotions and behaviors

Medications, although there are no drugs specifically approved to treat BPD, can be used to manage co-occurring conditions or specific symptoms

Peer support groups and community support can be valuable for coping and acceptance

Self-care strategies for BPD include:

Learning about the disorder

Engaging in regular physical activity

Establishing a routine

Practicing mindfulness and stress-reduction techniques

Avoiding drugs and alcohol
